Packing on the ounces…

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

So much has happened over the past week, I don’t know where to begin!  The biggest news I suppose… is me.  I went to the doctor yesterday for a weight check and I am up to 5 lbs 9 oz!  Mommy and daddy were shocked!  They said they noticed my cheeks were getting chubby, but they guessed I’d be closer to 5 lbs.  They were very pleased :)

This week brought some interesting events.  My belly button is in plain view now that my umbilical stump has fallen off.  And it didn’t even hurt!  I got to go on an outing last week to Redmond to visit Grandma Deane, Uncle Ryan and Aunt Emily, and I even got to sleep in Grandma Deane’s pram.  She used to use it when mommy and Uncle Ryan were babies!  It was really cozy.  Then we took a little side trip to meet my Great Uncle Ron and Great Aunt Carrie!  I am so lucky to have such a nice family!  Everyone is always so excited to see me.

The rest of the week has been spent resting and relaxing at home for the most part.  Mommy has been pretty sleepy, so we get to snuggle a lot.  I love to snuggle with mommy and daddy!  We took a walk around Greenlake over the weekend and we bought some fruit and veggies at the farmer’s market again on Saturday.

My diaper rash is still really sore, so mommy has been trying to get me to spend some time without a diaper to let things air out.  The trouble is, I don’t like sleeping without being wrapped up.  I just get grumpy and squeaky and end up in tears.  I don’t think this is what mommy has in mind, but I just don’t like being all open to the wind.  We’ll try again tomorrow.

Tonight I get to meet some more new people.  I can’t wait!  Molly and Toby are coming over this evening to have dinner with mommy and daddy.  Hopefully I can stay awake long enough to spend some time with them.  Then tomorrow I get to meet more friends!  Good stuff.

That’s all for now!

Monday – a big day!

Monday, August 20th, 2007

Well today was a very good day, judging by mommy’s and daddy’s mood.  We had a quiet day at home, so mommy and daddy gave me my first sponge bath!  Well, actually is wasn’t my first.  The nice nurses in the special care nursery gave me a few little sponge baths too, but mommy and daddy were pretty excited and made quite a fuss, so I didn’t have the heart to tell them.  They filled the bathroom sink and made me a nice little towel-lined place to lay while they wiped and washed and lathered and rinsed.  Apparently I can’t take a submerged bath until my belly button cord falls off.  I can’t say I am looking forward to losing a part of my belly!  But the bath sounds fun…. Anyway, my sponge bath was great.  At first I was a little distressed by all the wrapping and unwrapping in the towel, but it sure was nice to get really clean.  Thanks mommy and daddy!

Then this afternoon I had a doctor’s appointment with Dr. Seru.  She is my pediatrician.  Mommy and daddy were anxious to hear how my weight was coming along.  Everyone seems to be a tiny bit concerned about me being so little.  But I surprised them!!!  When they weighed me at the special care nursery on Friday I weighed 4 lbs 7.9 oz.  Today I weighed 4 lbs 12 oz!  What a difference a few days make.  Mommy and daddy were so happy that I couldn’t help but get excited, and when the doctor examined me and picked me up I just couldn’t contain myself.  I filled my diaper right there on the spot.  I guess it was a little noisy… everyone was laughing.

I continued my mission to keep mommy and daddy on their toes today as well, by peeing on daddy and by having a blow-out up my back while mommy was nursing me.  How fun!

Well, I think that is all for today.  Who knows what adventures the rest of the week will bring!

Home at last!

Afer a week in the special care nursery at Northwest Hospital, they finally decided to let me go home with mommy and daddy on Friday!  Mommy and daddy came to the nursery, put me into my own clothes, and had me fitted into my car seat.  It was an exciting adventure to go outside, sit in a car seat, and take the short car ride home.  What a world it is out there!  I hadn’t really ever seen daylight until Friday afternoon, and I suppose I didn’t know what I was missing.

When we got home, mommy and daddy seemed really happy to finally be there with me.  They showed me my new room, and gave me a tour of the house–what a great place, much better than the nursery that I was used to.  Grandpa Bob and Grandma Valorie came over to visit after I got home, and they held me, talked to me, and Grandma Valorie even changed my diaper!  I was so excited to come home that I even had a little poo squirt at mommy when she was changing my diaper.  I thought it was probably a good idea to get mommy and daddy used to doing lots of laundry early on, so I soiled a few receiving blankets when they were changing me.

Aunt Anne came to visit me too.  She held me and talked to me about baseball, which sounds like an interesting game.  It was a busy first day at home, but everyone was so excited to see me and finally be able to hold me that I can tell how much they really love me already.

On Saturday, mommy and daddy took me out for an adventure to the University Farmer’s Market.  It was fun taking another car ride, and mommy wrapped me up close to her in a thing called a “Moby” while we went through the market–I really like being wrapped up close to mommy like that, and it was fun to go outside and experience the market.  When we got home, Grandma Deane, Uncle Ryan, and Aunt Emily came over for brunch.  They were excited to see me, and it was fun to be held by them…much more comfortable than the short times that I could be held at the hospital.

Mommy and daddy have been helping me get into a routine, and they feed me every three hours, which begins with a breast feeding from mommy, then daddy usually feeds me fortified breast milk from a bottle (to help me grow bigger) while mommy pumps milk for me.  Then one of them changes my diaper, which always needs to be changed after I eat.  I don’t really like getting my diaper changed–sometimes I poo or pee just to keep mommy and daddy “on their toes”–but my diaper rash is getting better and I’m getting used to the new routine.

I’m trying to get lots of sleep and eat everything that mommy and daddy give me.  I can tell that mommy and daddy are tired and glad to be home.  Both of them have even fallen asleep with me in their arms (and I have pictures to prove it!)  I have a doctor’s appointment on Monday, so I think mommy and daddy want to make sure that I’m gaining enough weight and am doing everything that they need to do to help me grow.  Mom and dad are going a great job taking care of me and loving me, and I’m sure that I’ll be OK and that they don’t have anything to worry about!
